FEDERAL GOVERNMENT JOINS IN DEVELOPMENT OF NECS

The Federal Government has now joined the State and Territory Governments and the banking, legal, conveyancing and information broker industries as a member of the National Electronic Conveyancing System Steering Committee. This is a significant step in the development of a truly national system for electronic conveyancing.

NECS has wide ranging national ramifications and fits in well with the Federal Government’s thrust of red tape reduction, harmonization of State and Territory functions and finding national solutions to national problems. The new Federal Attorney-General, Robert McClelland, has recently expressed his support for NECS and confirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to assist in its development.

MAXIMISING INVOLVEMENT AND INPUT FROM INDUSTRY

Industry involvement in the development of NECS is critical to its success. In recognition of that we will shortly be seeking even greater involvement of industry in the process.

Industry stakeholders have made their position quite clear. The development of NECS must be conducted on a fully integrated, national basis with one project and one process giving one outcome. At its meeting on 23 November the Steering Committee endorsed a proposal to assist in achieving this.

A National Project Team is to be established to work collectively and collaboratively in delivering NECS. It will comprise representatives of key stakeholders possessing the necessary specialist knowledge of conveyancing and settlement. The process will kick off in the New Year when the we will convene a meeting of stakeholders to develop the objectives, structure and process for the National Project Team.

SEASON’S GREETINGS

As we see out 2007 and greet 2008 it is worth reflecting on what has been achieved in the development of the electronic conveyancing system for the whole of Australia. In a short time we have moved from a concept to a well developed and fully supported business model. We now have the foundations and the framework that will underpin the significant job ahead of us in 2008.

This could not have been achieved without the help and input from you - our stakeholders. Your support is greatly appreciated and it only remains for us to wish you,

Happy Holidays from NECO 2007
