Torrens Title System

Although each Australian State and Territory has developed it's own land registration practices and procedures, they are all founded in the Torrens Title system of land title registration, first developed in South Australia in the mid-19th Century.

The Torrens Title system provides for land ownership based on a single title document that carries a government guarantee and records all details and interests affecting that land. Significantly, this common system provides the foundation for developing a national conveyancing system.
